Seagulls Club delivers meals as vulnerable Tweed families spike during border closure and lockdown

A sports club that regularly helps families in need has seen demand increase as ongoing restrictions put a strain on residents.

A sports club donating meals to those in need has seen a spike in families requiring assistance during lockdown and border closures.

Seagulls in Tweed Heads last week launched an initiative intended to support local charities The Family Centre and Fred’s Place during lockdown by delivering more than 200 meals to each venue to help with need for assistance across the Tweed.

The charities, who each regularly support upward of 30-50 vulnerable families, youths and homeless people per day, have seen an increase in demand for services due to the NSW lockdown orders as well as the QLD-mandated border closure.

As Seagulls is closed under NSW Health Orders, staff have chosen to volunteer their time to prepare meals and help the charities.

Staff member Kellie McCrae said helping out had given her a purpose.

“Life is fragile. If you can help and give support it gives you joy and hope,” Ms McCrae said.

Other business’s have jumped on board to help support the initiative including Simon George and Sons who have donated fresh produce.

The Family Centre co-ordinator Jo Blanchard said border restrictions had hinders their partnership with OzHarvest who’s drivers have not been able to cross to deliver their donations.

“This amazing donation from Seagulls has been so timely and much appreciated,” she said.

Seagulls General Manager Stuart Burrows said they were lucky to have staff committed to supporting the community that need it the most.

“We are proud of each and every one of them and thank them for giving their time without hesitation,” he said.

Lockdown meal deliveries take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am and 1pm.
