Tweed Heads cafe La de da celebrates 13 years in business

Inspired by a 1960s rock band, a “fair dinkum” Aussie bakery boasts more than just its scrumptious patisserie items — cementing itself as a pillar in the Tweed community.

La De Da Bakery on Kennedy Drive boasts signature pies, quiches and birthday cakes but it’s the service and reliability that set it apart after 13 years in business.

Owners James and Faye Braid are locals in the community and say they are passionate about promoting other small local businesses.

Mr Braid said the name La De Da came originally from a group in the ’60s — one of his favourite bands, the La De Da’s.

“I think everyone in Kennedy Drive is down to earth and La De Da seemed to stick, it rolls off the tongue and everyone loves it,” Mr Braid said.

“The customers are consistent, they’re beautiful to deal with”

Mr Braid said La De Da had customers who were still coming since they took over from the original business 13 years ago.

“We know their names, we know everything about them,” he said.

“It’s not like a tourist strip where it’s changing every day, it’s the same people over and over; that’s the people we cater to.”

Casual worker Jane Anderson said for her it was all about supporting local businesses around the Tweed.

“James always has music on, we’ve got a lot of regular clientele, it’s a good community atmosphere and it makes your day go quickly when you’ve got good staff to work with,” Ms Anderson said.

“When Covid was on, people really relied on us because the border is just up Ducat Street so that brought the community closer together.

“If you need something really early or really late it’s perfect – bugger the big places, let’s keep it small, it’s about keeping it all local these days.

“Anything community related – we’re up to give anything a go.”
