THE boardwalk at Jack Evans Boat Harbour might have been a long time coming, but stage one received an overwhelmingly positive response from Tweed residents.

People walking the boardwalk yesterday morning were surprised at the speed it was completed and have given the Tweed Shire Council a big thumbs-up on the new foreshore.

Tweed resident Sammy Zuis said the boardwalk was a “world-class”

feature.

“I think they will have a cafeteria, but with the club (Twin Towns Services Club) here there will be some politics to get through,” he said.

Jeff Preston and Victoria Harris live close to the boat harbour and saw its transformation.

“We are very excited and it (construction) happened very quickly,” Ms Harris said. “We can't believe that they (council) got their act together,”

The parkland, which features extensive boardwalks, large swimming area, modern park furniture, landscaping and green space, was based on a concept plan developed five years ago.

The council has approved a tender to build a toilet block at the harbour.

Tweed Shire councillor Katie Milne argued that the cost ($464,809) of the toilets was too high, but despite her protests the tender was approved by council.

A report to council stated that the costs increased due to a complex wedge-shaped site and fittings that minimised vandalism.

The $8 million stage two was waiting Federal Government funding.
