TONY Abbott crashed the glamorous Sydney wedding of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak’s son while he was prime minister — and the computer genius had no idea who he was.
Unlike in the movie starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, Mr Abbott didn’t bother putting on a suit — choosing to wear just pants and a polo shirt when he wandered into the January 2014 wedding reception of Jesse and Sally Wozniak at Bathers’ Pavilion on Balmoral Beach.
US-born Steve Wozniak, 65, whose son lives in Manly, revealed the encounter in an exclusive interview with The Daily Telegraph after addressing last week’s Future Transport Summit organised by Transport Minister Andrew Constance.
“I had someone crash my son’s wedding here in Sydney — came in a polo shirt and said his name, and he was some kind of minister. I didn’t know who he was,” he said.
“Twenty minutes later I saw him taking pictures with people and discovered it was Tony Abbott. I didn’t know he was prime minister. He wanted to meet me.”
Mr Abbott asked to exchange email addresses with Mr Wozniak, and the Apple co-founder said he was keen to have “input” on the government’s National Broadband Network.
“He was very nice. Even though I disagree with his politics in a lot of ways, I still consider I like him,” Mr Wozniak said.
A spokesman for Mr Abbott confirmed the encounter, saying he had been at a separate private event at Bathers’ Pavilion while the Wozniak wedding was on.
The spokesman said the venue’s owner had asked him to go upstairs to meet Mr Wozniak, who has taken up Australian residency.
