Three members of the one family killed in a horror crash in Canberra were ‘on the trip of a lifetime’ visiting their son who is studying at university.
Mohammed Sahid Shahidullah, his wife Raziah Sultana Khan and their youngest son Roni, 21, died at the scene when their car collided with a van at Whitlam, on Sunday afternoon.
The Bangladeshi tourists were in Australia to visit their eldest son Rashed, 24, who is studying a doctorate.
Heartbreakingly, a relative said Rashed, who was driving the car but survived the crash with critical injuries, does not know his parents and brother had died.
“Rashed is still not conscious in the ICU ward … he does not know his family did not survive,” Abdullah Sakr said.
Paramedics rushed Rashed and the male driver of the van to hospital, after being called to Coppins Crossing Rd at 2.45pm.
Locals said the stretch of road where the crash happened was “notoriously bad” and known for its potholes.
The crash comes a week after two teenage girls were allegedly killed when a car they were passengers in hit a tree on the Monaro Highway at Hume last Sunday morning.
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of culpable driving causing death.
The two girls, aged 14 and 15, died at the scene.
Police crash investigation specialists are still working out how the Whitlam accident happened, and have appealed to anyone who witnessed it or who has dashcam footage to come forward.
Residents who live near the crash scene said the road was a “notorious stretch” and a known hazard spot “full of pot holes”.
“I went through just before this accident and said out loud how much worse it’s gotten. It would not surprise me at all if it played a part in this tragedy,” one person posted on Facebook.
Another said: “What will it take to get this road fixed? We have been complaining about the potholes and the deterioration for years.”
