Three people have died in a horror single-vehicle crash in the Southern Tablelands, with the driver of the car taken to hospital and police investigating if speed played a role in the fatal incident.
The trio were passengers riding in a four-wheel drive car through Tarago — 40km south of Goulburn — on Sunday, when their vehicle reportedly left the road, rolled and flipped onto its roof.
About 1.10pm emergency services, including multiple police, fire and rescue and ambulance crews, were called to the intersection of Bungendore and Collector Roads where they found the three passengers — a man and two women — trapped in the car.
All three died at the scene. They are yet to be formally identified.
The 20-year-old driver of the vehicle was able to free himself unassisted. He was taken to Canberra Hospital with minor injuries, and to undergo mandatory blood tests.
Specialist crash officers attached to the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit remained at the scene on Sunday evening, as inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash continued. They confirmed speed will be a factor they will investigate.
Officers will also prepare a report for the Coroner.
Bungendore Road remains closed between Collector Road and the Kings Highway, and north to the Tarago township with police saying the roadway is “likely to be closed for some hours” with motorists advised to delay their travel if possible or find an alternate route.
Anyone with dash cam footage or information relating to the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
