Sydney man arrested after 60kg of methamphetamine worth $55.5 million found in shopping bags

A Sydney man could spend life behind bars after police found $55.5 million worth of methamphetamine inside shopping bags in the boot of the car he was driving.

A Sydney man could spend life behind bars after police found $55.5 million worth of methamphetamine inside shopping bags in the boot of the car he was allegedly driving.

The 42 year – old man was initially reported acting “suspiciously” while driving a car and truck in Earlwood – southwest of Sydney, on June 24.

The following day officers executed a search warrant on the truck which was parked on a street in Earlwood and located two shopping bags with 1kg of methamphetamine in each.

These bags were seized by police for examination.

Police also searched the car after finding it in a supermarket car park at Earlwood.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers located and seized 60kg of methamphetamine which was being stored in six cooler shopping bags in the car’s boot.

These drugs had an estimated potential street value of $55.5 million.

The man – who resides in Earlwood, was arrested by police on June 24 and was charged with one count of possess a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported border controlled drugs, an offence with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Police then executed a search warrant at the man’s home where they located and seized mobile phones, a laptop, six luxury watches and clothing items.

The man appeared before Parramatta Local Court on June 30 where he was remanded in custody to appear in the same court the following day.

He is now set to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on August 28.

AFP Detective Superintendent Kristie Cressy said the AFP is committed to combating drug trafficking in the country.

“The AFP is committed to identifying those responsible for the importation of these illegal drugs and their intended distribution across Australian communities,” she said.

“An import of this size had the potential to cause significant harm in our community.

“Criminal syndicates go to great lengths to conceal their activities, but that will never deter the AFP and its domestic and international partners.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
