Nine Sydney toll roads to cost more from New Year’s Day

It won’t be a happy new year for motorists, who are set to pay even more in tolls across Sydney as nine major roads hike their prices on New Year’s Day.

Transurban figures show drop in traffic in first quarter

It’s the New Year present no motorist wants but Sydney’s toll roads will once again ramp up their prices on January 1.

Nine much-frequented Sydney motorways will cost motorists more, with the increases ranging between 0.8 per cent and 4 per cent on each toll.

Western Sydney drivers will cop the biggest price increase with the WestConnex M4 going up 35c for cars, costing $8.87, while trucks will pay $1.03 more leading to a mammoth $26.61 toll. The WestConnex M8 ranked at second place with cars paying 29c more and trucks paying 86c more.

WestConnex M4$8.87$26.61
WestConnex M8$7.52$22.56
Westlink M7$8.59$25.77

The Cross City Tunnel had the lowest increase with 5c more for cars and 10c more for trucks followed by the M7 which notched an increase of just 7c for cars and 21c for trucks.

Truck drivers will have little relief with large vehicles paying three times the price of a standard car on the M7, M8, M4, NorthConnex, M5 East, M2, and Lane Cove Tunnel.

The Eastern Distributor and Cross City Tunnel cost trucks twice as much to use as cars. Labor leader Chris Minns said the increases were a sign of Premier Dominic Perrottet’s tolls “obsession”.

“NSW drivers will be paying more than ever before in tolls thanks to Dominic Perrottet and his obsession with privatisation and toll roads,” Mr Minns said. “We are the most tolled city in the world and the bad news for drivers is Dominic Perrottet has locked in 4 per cent rises every year for the next 20 years.”

Metropolitan Roads Minister Natalie Ward said the government would continue to “consider” options to reduce the cost of living for NSW families.

“The NSW Government is delivering programs to reduce the cost of tolls on NSW households including the Toll Relief program introduced in 2018 to provide free or half-price registration costs for eligible road users,” she said.

“Last financial year alone, almost $70m was paid to around 200,000 eligible drivers under the Toll Relief program.”
