The Snitch: John Ibrahim’s son Daniel cleared but could still be forced to stand trial

Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim’s son Daniel Taylor was cleared of charges that he dealt with $2.25 million used for illegal tobacco smuggling, but the Commonwealth DPP could prosecute him anyway, using a legal process called an ex-officio indictment.

Daniel Ibrahim was cleared of charges that he dealt with $2.25 million used for illegal tobacco smuggling, but it’s rumoured that the Commonwealth DPP could prosecute the son of Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim anyway.

Daniel Ibrahim, who is also known as Daniel Taylor, had his charges dismissed after a committal hearing in Central Local Court last December. But in these situations, if prosecutors disagree they can proceed with an ex-officio indictment.

In English, that means they can force an accused to stand trial anyway.

The 28-year-old was charged with dealing with the proceeds of crime after he travelled in a car from the eastern suburbs to Rozelle on July 24, 2017, with the cash in a bag and a suitcase in the boot.

The charges were thrown out after Ibrahim’s lawyer Michael Gatenby argued his client was “nothing more than a rear passenger” on a trip to get pizza with his uncle.

Mr Gatenby said he had been told by the CDPP that they would not continue with the prosecution of his client.

A CDPP spokeswoman ducked the question of whether they would continue with the ex-officio indictment.

“The CDPP can confirm that Daniel Taylor was discharged at the conclusion of committal proceedings in December 2018 and there are currently no proceedings on foot against him with which the CDPP has conduct,” the spokeswoman said.

THE UNDERWORLD’S LITTLE SECRET

OK crims of NSW, it’s time we sat down and had a chat.

The Snitch has become aware that a number of your ranks have a secret affection for the transgendered.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just that it comes as a surprise, given the blokey and homophobic world that you inhabit.

We won’t reveal the names of those involved.

In recent times, we have become aware of numerous crims who have been caught on secret recordings confessing their secret.

There was only one common feature: all of the criminals had similar tastes for feminine men who presented as women.

In one case, a criminal called a close associate to confess that he didn’t know how to address his addiction and was desperately worried that word would leak in the underworld.

The person on the other end of the line warned that if word got out it would smear their reputation and affect their ability to do business.

In another, the man with the fetish was a follower of the Muslim faith.

The person he was telling his secret to was firm on the issue that he had to give it up because the Koran said hot coals would come from his rear end if he continued.

We were told of another instance in which a crim was caught by his wife while on a Southeast Asian getaway, only for him to swear her to secrecy.

However, another man openly told his mates that when in Thailand he would schedule dalliances with “ladyboys”.

COP CRACKS GLASS CEILING

You’d think in this day and age it wouldn’t be hard to find a woman in a senior role at NSW Police’s investigative nerve centre. But as the cards fall, the State Crime Command has recently recruited its only female inspector.

Detective Inspector Jayne Doherty made the move from crime manager at Camden to take up a senior position at the Drugs and Firearms Squad last month.

The former covert investigations unit manager has plenty of experience in major crime and previously worked at the drug squad as a sergeant.

Fun fact: Insp Doherty, who is married to Robbery and Serious Crime Squad boss Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, wanted to join the cops from a young age, but had to bide her time at Customs for five years until the height requirement for joining the NSW Police Force dropped and she signed up.

While Insp Doherty is currently the only female inspector at SCC — which is in no way a reflection of the selection process — she is in good company with female investigators in higher and lower ranks.

There is still a way to go though, with women making up 34.7 per cent of the NSW Police workforce but falling short of the organisation’s 50 per cent benchmark.

WHEELS OF JUSTICE

After seven years with a drug case hanging over his head, a member of a notorious Sydney family has been granted a rare legal reprieve.

Mejid Hamzy — the brother of murderer and Supermax inmate Bassam Hamzy — faced trial in 2017 for allegedly importing methamphetamine into Australia.

The jury couldn’t reach a verdict and Hamzy was due to face a second trial last month.

However he has managed to secure his freedom after the Court of Criminal Appeal took the “exceptional course” in ordering a permanent stay on his case.

The Crown had planned on going for round two with Hamzy armed with a fresh indictment.

It was much the same as the first but inserted next to Mejid’s name “and unknown others”, essentially alleging other people were involved in the importation.

Hamzy’s co-accused Gianmarco Romolo was acquitted of the drug importation charge in 2018.

In the Court of Criminal Appeal last month, Hamzy’s legal team submitted it was an abuse of process for the Crown to change its case ahead of the second trial.
