The Snitch: Case of Redzel’s missing $320k Everest trophy over

The great mystery surrounding what happened to champion racehorse Redzel’s missing Everest trophy has been solved ... but we may never know what happened.

EXPLAINER: Redzel aims to scale Everest again

The great mystery surrounding what happened to champion racehorse Redzel’s missing trophy just got even more mysterious.

Earlier this year, a number of Redzel’s owners launched legal action against the managers of the syndicate, Triple Crown Bloodstock, in a case that ended up in the NSW Supreme Court.

The owners alleged the $320,000 diamond-encrusted trophy Redzel won after taking out 2017’s The Everest race had been sold without their permission.

The case promised to reveal what actually happened to the trophy, but it now seems we will get no answers.

The case went to mediation and a confidential settlement was reached between the owners and Triple Crown. According to Supreme Court records, the proceedings were “finalised by consent” on Wednesday.

The Snitch understands some money changed hands but, with a confidentiality agreement in place, we won’t know unless someone jumps the gate.

Our calls to Triple Crown boss Michael Ward went unanswered. Similarly, the lawyer for the owners Mark Carmody said he could not comment.

NO-GO GIFT BOX

A seemingly good deed has landed a couple of police officers on the hotel quarantine circuit in hot water.

The inspector and sergeant, usually based at the Corrective Services Investigation Unit in Parramatta, were doing their time on the hotel quarantine roster in the CBD recently.

The story goes the pair got wind that a New Zealand actress was in mandatory 14-day quarantine at another hotel across town.

Armed with a gift box of baked goods, the officers crossed into the no-go zone to personally deliver the hamper to the star’s hotel door.

The grateful VIP guest was so chuffed she gave the cops a shout-out on social media. But the special delivery wasn’t as well received back at the station.

The Snitch understands the officers were placed on restricted duties.

MOUTHGUARDS IN

Forget State of Origin, it’s a big week for rugby league in the court system this week, too. St George Illawarra star Jack de Belin’s trial will continue in Wollongong District Court, where he is defending charges that he raped a 19-year-old woman at an apartment two years ago.

DROPPED CHARGES

More bad news for the police from the Mick Hawi murder trial.

On Wednesday, prosecutors dropped a firearm charge against Jamal Eljaidi.

In September, Eljaidi was found not guilty of murder after prosecutors alleged he was the getaway driver after Hawi was assassinated outside a Rockdale gym in 2018.

The alleged shooter was also found not guilty.

The firearms charge was the last chance to put Eljaidi in jail. But it was withdrawn after Eljaidi’s lawyer Mahmoud Abbas made a successful no-bill application to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The gun was not used to kill Hawi, however it was found by investigators at a house alleged to have been the storing place for one of the getaway cars.

It also had Eljaidi’s DNA on it.

But Mr Abbas argued that just because Eljaidi’s DNA was on the gun, it could not be ruled out that it had not been transferred there by another means.
