Police are investigating whether social media taunts were behind a shooting after a car with a child, three teenagers and an adult inside was riddled with bullets in Sydney’s southwest.

Armed police from the Public Order and Riot Squad arrested a 20-year-old man on Monday morning outside a unit block on Clack Road, Chester Hill.

Police believe the occupants of the white Toyota Yaris were targeted by the gunman who had been driving a silver Toyota Orion.

Shortly after the shooting, the Yaris was involved in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Townsend and Manahan Streets in Condell Park.

It is alleged the 20-year-old was leaving the unit block in a silver Toyota Orion which has been seized for forensic testing as officers with the Tactical Operations Unit carried out a search warrant on a unit.

Five people — including two 17-year-olds, a 16-year-old, a 12-year-old and a 37-year-old — were inside the car when shots were fired but all escaped uninjured.

The 20-year-old has been taken to Bankstown Police Station where he is expected to be charged.

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV of the incident are asked to come forward.
