'Deradicalisation': the cure for extremism?

The extended family of slain Islamic State fighter Mohamed Elomar has lost another young man in the line of fire — this time on the streets of southwest Sydney.

Omar Elomar, 18, was shot in the chest with a single round in what police say was a “targeted” hit on Cabramatta Ave at Miller about 11.10pm Saturday.

He collapsed beside his silver Lexus bearing red P-plates, and died there despite the efforts of a resident who ran from his home to attempt CPR.

The shooting occurred in front of Miller Park - a large family play area beside Miller Technology High School - where forensics crews scoured for fingerprints and bagged items found in the grass yesterday.

A witness told The Daily Telegraph people were laughing in the park which is popular for “gatherings” before he heard shouting in Arabic then a gunshot.

“Bang, and then two of the cars were off. It’s the lowest thing, shooting a gun … and ending a kid’s life,” the man said.

Mr Elomar, who had no criminal history, is a relative of Ibrahim Elomar, who is the uncle of fallen ISIS fighter Mohamed Elomar and his Sydney-based brother Ahmed Elomar.

Mohamed fled Sydney to join Islamic State in 2013, where he posed for photographs holding severed human heads. The federal government announced in 2015 he had been killed by a coalition air strike.

Ahmed served three years jail for bashing a police officer in the 2012 Hyde Park riots. He was convicted in February 2018 of threatening a father at his son’s soccer match but beat the charge on appeal.

But Omar’s family said he was a hardworking young man who dreamed of being a lawyer.

The teenager’s sister Shayma Elomar was distraught yesterday after learning her brother was dead.

“Last night somebody thought it was OK to take away one of the two and only brothers that I have! Omar I have no f...ing words! I have no more ambition for life!,” she wrote on social media.

“Anyone who knew this beautiful soul knew how happy and amazing he was. Omar wanted to be a lawyer … Omar was going places in life. Don’t tell me I’m never going to feel those tight back- breaking hugs again and cheek bruising kisses.”

His cousin Saad Aboulhaf was in shock yesterday when he received a call saying the young man he drove to work every day, had been killed.

“If he was older you’d probably say, ‘OK he’s had a past’ but he’s only young,” Mr Aboulhaf said.

“He was just an innocent kid, no drugs, no alcohol, no partying, no nothing at all.

“This is a kid that goes to work every day, starts at six in the morning, goes ‘til about three-thirty or five o’clock and goes home.”

Mr Elomar died outside the home of Raed Kalal who ran outside and tried in vain to save him.

“I’ve heard a gunshot, ran out, called the ambulance, started doing CPR and the bloke died straight away,” Mr Kalal said.

“I tried CPR, mouth to mouth … I had my phone on the ground and the ambulance they were (talking to me). I tried my best … I’ll try save any life, doesn’t matter who it is.”
