A busy Haymarket intersection was closed to CBD drivers into the evening after a light rail tram and a fire truck collided on Monday morning.
Two people were hospitalised after the collision at Pitt Street and Eddy Avenue.
A Fire and Rescue NSW fire pumper responding to an emergency incident struck the tram on Pitt Street and derailed the front carriage shortly before 11am.
Paramedics treated five people at the scene for injuries.
A firefighter in his 40s, who is believed to be the truck driver was hospitalised with minor injuries, and a female tram passenger believed to be in her 70s suffering chest injuries.
The man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred and the woman was transported to St Vincents Hospital – both in a stable condition.
“Three people were assessed by paramedics and didn’t require any further treatment, while two people were taken to hospital,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Ben Saywell said.
“This occurred in a really busy part of the CBD with a lot of pedestrians, so we’re thankful that no one was seriously injured.”
Both vehicles also sustained significant damage with the inner mechanics of the light rail tram becoming exposed as the front of the carriage was torn off in the crash.

“It’s definitely a different level when you’re going to attend to your own colleagues,” FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.
“We’ll go through our processes to investigate the events leading up to the collision, and the police will do their investigation as well.”
FRNSW also dispatched a rescue truck to help get the train back on the track.
There was no access into Eddy Ave from Elizabeth Street, and Pitt St was closed in both directions until 7 PM on Monday evening.
Light rail services have since resumed between Central and Circular Quay, and all lanes of Pitt Street and Eddy Avenue are now open at Haymarket.
