Sydney weather: Triple La Niña climate event confirmed for 2022-23 summer

The news so many Aussies were dreading has finally arrived – La Niña has returned for the third year in a row. Here’s what it means for your summer.

Understanding ENSO

The news so many Aussies were dreading has finally arrived – La Niña has returned for the third year in a row.

The rare event occurs when strong winds push warm Pacific Ocean waters towards the nation’s east coast, forcing moisture into the atmosphere which brings heavy rains and floods to regions across the coast.

Australian summers have been tarnished by unprecedented events over the last few years, and it’s not only been the recent two La Niñas that have dampened things, but the dreaded coronavirus restrictions also make it easy to forget about the bushfires that kept our sun hidden behind the clouds of smoke in the 2019-20 season.

Now we’re in for a triple La Niña, which has only happened a couple of times since modern recordings began in 1900.

Key findings from the report read, “Key atmospheric and oceanic indicators of the El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO) show an established La Niña.

“Tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures have been cooling since June and are now at La Niña thresholds.

“Models indicate this La Niña event may peak during the spring and return to neutral conditions early in 2023.

“La Niña events increase the chances of above-average rainfall for northern and eastern Australia during spring and summer.”

The Bureau of Meteorology declared the previous La Niña event over in June, putting the country on a La Niña “watch” for the last few months.
