Sydney’s outer suburbs are waking up to some of the coldest mornings of the year, with frost settling over backyards and windscreens as temperatures plummet to near freezing.

On Wednesday morning, Richmond dropped to a chilling 0C, Campbelltown hit 1C and Penrith recorded just 2C.

The cold snap is expected to stick around through the weekend, with morning minimums as low as 6C in the city and even colder in the west, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

But the chill will be short-lived once the sun rises, with Sydney enjoying a classic winter pattern of crisp starts followed by clear, calm and sunny days — a trend that will peak early next week with temperatures surging to an unseasonably warm 22C.

Thursday and Friday are forecast to reach 17C, with 18C on Saturday and 19C on Sunday.

Light winds and clear skies will dominate, with almost no chance of rain until early next week. UV levels will remain low, with a predicted index of 2.

Monday and Tuesday will bring the real surprise, tops of 22–23C are forecast across the city, with Tuesday bringing a slight chance of showers as northerly winds pick up.

The warm spell coincides with the darkest week of the year.

The Southern Hemisphere’s winter solstice falls on Saturday, June 21 — the shortest day and longest night of 2025 — and Australia will experience its least daylight from now until next Tuesday.

Elsewhere in NSW, the chill has been even more severe.

Glen Innes recorded a low of –6.7C on Wednesday — its coldest morning of 2025 so far — while Canberra shivered through –5.1C and Thredbo Top Station reached –5.3C.

Despite the icy starts, the Harbour City is in for a run of pleasant winter weather, kicking off early next week.
