Sydney petrol prices: Northern Beaches fuel approaches $2 a litre

Petrol prices are closing in on $2 a litre across some parts of Sydney. Find out which suburbs have the most expensive fuel prices, and which ones have the cheapest.

Petrol prices are surging across Sydney with many places approaching $2 a litre, almost 50 cents more than the cheapest fuel in town.

The city’s western suburbs have some of the most affordable petrol with an average 155 cents per litre for regular unleaded fuel.

However motorists on the Northern Beaches and North Shore are being stung 199.9 cents per litre.

Villawood Apex in Sydney’s west has some of the cheapest petrol in Sydney at 154.5 cents a litre.

Analysis by The Daily Telegraph showed the most affordable unleaded 94 (E10) petrol on Tuesday was at Metro Fuel Croydon Park at 152.9 cents.

Less than 17km north, the same fuel cost 197.9 cents at Ampol Woolworths Metro Neutral Bay and Coles Express Cremorne, while unleaded 91 was on the cusp of $2 a litre at 199.9 cents.

Unleaded 91 at Villawood Apex in Sydney’s west was significantly less at 154.5 cents a litre.

New market research showed the average cost for unleaded petrol in Sydney was $1.68.

“Sydney is well on the way for some record prices across the city with several retailers on the cusp of breaking the $2 a litre barrier,” Compare the Market spokesman Chris Ford said.

“There’s growing demand on the roads locally as children head back to school and tensions in Europe and the Middle East are still putting pressure on supply.

“The price disparity is quite startling, with a 45-cent difference between the cheapest and most expensive fuel on the Sydney market [on Tuesday]. That’s a saving of more than $22 to fill a 50-litre tank.”

There also appears to be little reprieve for regional commuters with unleaded 91 costing between 176.7 and 185.9 cents a litre on the Central Coast, and 187.9 cents at BP West in Wollongong.

Regular unleaded petrol at Mosman BP Express was at 199.9 cents on Tuesday.

Despite being designed as a fuel-economic car, a 50-litre Toyota Corolla would cost drivers $99.95 in northern Sydney. For an 80-litre Toyota HiLux, the cost to fill up would sit at around $160.

“This is not uncommon in Sydney. You consistently see some suburbs that are cheaper than average,” NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said.

“We tend to see higher than usual prices in areas like the Hills District, North Shore, Northern Beaches and, to an extent, the Eastern Suburbs.

“Suburbs in western and southwest Sydney have a greater concentration of independent and cheaper service stations. We refer to them as ‘go through’ suburbs. They’re suburbs that carry a lot more traffic, whereas for others, there isn’t as much traffic and as much competition for customers.

“Don’t underestimate the importance of doing your research before filling up. Real time data is key here.”
