The heat arrived early but today is officially the first day of summer and time for a festival of fun.
Sydney is set to entertain locals and visitors alike over the coming months with a huge range of events from the worlds of sport, arts, music, food and culture.
Apart from the annual classics such as the 79th Sydney to Hobart yacht race and the Australia and India New Year cricket test, Supercars will take to the track, Sail GP will captivate those around the harbour and the United Cup will attract both local and international stars of tennis.
Lovers of art, or those seeking some airconditioned comfort in the city’s galleries and museums, have the Machu Picchu exhibition at the Australian Museum, Magritte at the Art Gallery of NSW and more to choose from.
Providing the musical and theatrical treats is the hit show Titanique, Sydney Festival will kick off in January and Cirque du Soleil is back in the big top at Moore Park.
To celebrate the summer of fun, a host of names from these various worlds joined Minister for the Arts, Music, the Night-time Economy, Jobs and Tourism John Graham to toast the start of summer in Sydney.
“It really is the moment our hard working city downs tools and comes out to play,” Mr Graham said. “It is a great moment to be in Sydney and we are joined by millions of visitors – nearly 10 million last year. So it’s a great time to be out and about with friends and family.”
It is also great for the local economy.
In the year ending June 2024, Sydney saw 37.5 million international and domestic visitors, who spent $26.8 billion.
Apart from the visiting exhibitions and events, Mr Graham called out the great always-on experiences such as the wave pool Urban Surf which opened at Sydney Olympic Park this year.
“Its important to slow down, by the beach or the pool, but it is a time to be out and about being with other people, members of the community and see what’s on in Sydney,” the minister said.
