Party animals searching for a Covid-safe view of Friday’s New Year’s Eve fireworks are in luck with numerous city hotel rooms with spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge still available, but at a price.
While prices for a hotel room with a view of the Opera House and Bridge have spiked for New Year’s Eve, suites which would be completely booked months in advance still have space available this year due to ongoing travel restrictions for tourists.
That includes the View Hotel in North Sydney which has commanding vistas over the harbour with a Bay Deluxe Room still available for $2000 for the night.
Other options include the Horizon Club suite at the Shangri-La Hotel in Circular Quay at a price of $5995 while the Pier One hotel still has space in some of the Bridge View rooms for $1,999.
Some popular hotels like the Meriton Suites North Sydney are already booked out but there is still space at the Harbour Rocks Hotel where a Harbour View Suite is going for a pricey $10,799.
Meanwhile, Airbnb options were dwindling for New Year’s Eve with almost nothing with a harbour view available.
Accommodation Australia chief executive Richard Munro said this year would be one of the best years to stay in a hotel because prices were relatively cheaper due to the fact there were no tourists from overseas.
“City hotels are more accessible than ever before because of the situation that we’re in,” he said.
“The corporate and conference bookings haven’t been there but there are definitely opportunities for leisure customers.”
His advice was to also check out rooms later in January for those wanting to plan a staycation because there were bargains to be had all throughout the month due to the absence of business travellers.
He said there would be plenty of things to do in the city with events like the Sydney Festival and plans to close the Cahill Expressway to traffic so it can host markets, bars and performances until January 6.
“Hotels also offer more than just a room, they offer a whole suite of things including gymnasiums, spas, a lot of the bars are fantastic,” he said.
Manager of the View Hotel in North Sydney Sam Allen said staying at the hotel during New Year’s Eve promised guests a memorable experience for the right reasons — without having to deal with the crowds and getting home in the middle of the night.
“(You can) avoid the crowds and wait times … Check in and relax in the comfort of your room with breathtaking views of the fireworks,” he said.
The hotel’s event co-ordinator Bailey Ward said guests wouldn’t be disappointed from having a full vista of the bridge and harbour for the fireworks.
“It probably sounds funny, but I still can’t get over the view, every day I come to work I am in awe,” he said.
“Every day it changes with the different weather, it can go from overcast in the morning to being really light and bright.”
