Six tonnes of fireworks to go up in smoke at midnight on New Year’s Eve

The resilience of Sydney will be the theme on New Year’s Eve when six tonnes of fireworks are blasted into the sky at midnight to wave goodbye to 2021.

Welcome to Country fireworks at Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations

It’s been a tough two years for most across NSW but with New Year’s Eve just around the corner, Sydney is promising to bring in 2022 with its biggest fireworks display in history.

The midnight show will feature six tonnes of fireworks which executive producer Stephen Gilby said will offer a way to celebrate “the resilience of Sydney”.

“This year is in particular a real celebration of Sydney’s resilience and hopefully signalling that to the rest of the world that there’s something more coming after all of this difficulty,” Mr Gilby said.

“We’re one of the first cities in the world to celebrate New Year’s Eve and what we do here in Sydney really does set the stage for the rest of the world celebrations.”

On Wednesday morning, Mr Gilby, fireworks director Fortunato Foti and City of Sydney staff locked and loaded the 2022 fireworks display, promised to be bigger and better than ever for the ticketed families and couples expected to descend on the harbour.

“We loaded the fireworks down at Glebe Island with Foti International Fireworks, who have done the pyro for the last 25 years,” Mr Gilby said.

“They used 60 tonnes of equipment, six tonnes of fireworks and more than 80,000 pyrotechnic effects for the night.”

There are more than 30 ticketed harbourside vantage points this year and Mr Gilby said tickets were selling fast.
