Crown Sydney in Barangaroo runs competition for frontline workers

Crown Sydney in Barangaroo is seeking 50 Community Champions to win a luxury stay — and be among the first to see the view from its new SkyDeck.

Karen Norris was thrown into the frontline of the pandemic to meet demands at the Bondi Covid-19 testing clinic.

The 40-year-old paediatric nurse from Hillsdale worked extra hours and weekends to swab children at the Bondi testing clinic, easing the minds of anxious Sydney parents with sick kids.

“I was still working full time but initially down at Bondi they didn’t have any paediatric nurses there and were getting a lot of kids coming through and the adult-trained nurses weren’t necessarily always comfortable swabbing kids. It’s definitely a different set of skills that are needed to take swab children.”

“It was really great for parents to not have to go to the hospital and worry about parking and things like that while their kids were really sick and the whole family could get swabbed in the car in one go.”

Ms Norris was working six days a week in the winter months of last year and said while it was a busy time for the hospitals “being out in the elements was just nuts”.

Her dedication to the health of Sydney residents is why she has been nominated as a Community Champion and will go into the running to be rewarded for her efforts with a luxury stay at Crown Sydney.

“I really enjoyed it, you know, well as much as you can. I just think nursing is so varied and it was quite an experience to be part of the testing clinic,” Ms Norris said.

“They were all such busy days, it was non-stop from when it opened at nine and they closed the gates at four and we would have to turn cars away.

“The nurses I worked with were just so lovely and that was their full time work there. Everyone including the security guards and the lollipop ladies built amazing friendships.

“Some of the cafes in the area were bringing down coffees and stuff so that was also really beautiful.”

Ms Norris’s nomination puts her in the running to become one of 50 Community Champions who will receive a luxury stay for two at Crown Sydney and become one of the first to view our sparkling city from the hotel’s SkyDeck which opens to the public on July 1.
