Sydney areas where rubbish dobbing is rising

Sydneysiders are sick and tired of seeing rubbish dumped in their streets and they are doing something about it. See what our city’s biggest complaints are.

It’s the hard truth Sydneysiders won’t want to hear – we are a city of dumpers and dobbers.

New statistics show we are dobbing in our dumping neighbours more and more, with Western Sydney seeing a 26 per cent increase in reports compared with last year.

Snap Send Solve, which directs complaints to the relevant council, received 2405 complaints from January to June this year from the west, up from 1906 in the same period last year.

While reports are going up more in Western Sydney, it’s the inner city and south that are the biggest rubbish dobbers.

6696 complaints have been made this year in the metro area spanning Strathfield to Waverley and down to Sutherland, up 3 per cent.

Sydney real estate agent Ty Demirezen knows how important kerb appeal is to making a sale, and how a pile of rubbish, graffiti or damaged roads can easily spook a buyer.

He’s turned to Snap Send Solve to keep the eastern suburbs beautiful and to boost his bottom line.

“There’s a huge impact — we are in a world where Instagram and image is everything … if they see dumped rubbish or graffiti they think this area must be rough and they are less likely to buy,” he said.

“Cleaning up and making a place feel inviting drastically changes people’s mindset — I noticed that particularly during Covid.”

No problem is too small for Ty — he will go on what he calls a reporting “blitz”, so far he’s reported 45 incidents to various councils.

And he wants other Sydneysiders to join him as a proud dobber.

“Whether its trolleys left behind or things that are broken, it takes 30 seconds to send a report and get someone on it,” he said.

Dumped car tyres are a particular problem across Sydney, with 227 reports this year across the Greater Sydney area — that’s a 100 per cent increase from last year.

Rubbish and bin related complaints are the biggest problem for the city, inner west and eastern suburbs this year with 17,310 reports for all things waste.

Canterbury-Bankstown Council is determined to stamp out illegal dumping, so much so that the Bulldogs NRL team have been enlisted in a campaign to get residents to book bulky waste clean-ups.

“People who illegally dump on the side of the street and on footpaths have no respect for the community and the law,” Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said.

“They want to cut corners and in doing so create eyesores across our city.

“We will continue our campaigns to crack down on those doing the wrong thing.”

For councils north of the Harbour Bridge and in Western Sydney, parking and car related issues were the number one issue.

Complaints about parking is on the rise too, spiking 24 per cent in the inner west, east and south, 31 per cent in western Sydney and 29 per cent in the north.

Anyone can download the Snap Send Solve app and simply take a picture of the issue, report the address and the app will send the complaint to the relevant council or authority.
