A FULL emergency response has been activated at Sydney Airport this morning after a pilot made a mayday call before landing.
United Airlines flight UA839 landed safely at Sydney Airport.
A spokeswoman for Airservices Australia said a “fuel mayday” caused the incident, not dry ice.
“There was dry ice on the plane but it had nothing to do with the mayday,” the spokeswoman said.
United Airlines released a statement, putting the call down to mechanical failings.
“United flight 839 from Los Angeles to Sydney landed safely in Sydney after following a mechanical issue. The aircraft taxied to the gate and all customers disembarked normally,” the statement said.

Shortly after the alert was made, airport firefighters declared the plane safe.
Police were alerted to the pilot’s concerns shortly after 6am before a full emergency response was activated.
A police traffic control plan was activated at 6.36am, with some major roads surrounding the airport closed as a precaution.
The plane landed safely without incident and the roads were reopened shortly after.
