Surry Hills and Bondi residents turning to Airtasker to outsource jobs
Sydneysiders are putting down their tools and mops and turning to the internet to outsource chores with residents in two particular suburbs more likely to pay someone to complete simple tasks. FIND OUT THE JOBS AUSSIES ARE AVOIDING.
Australians are putting down the tools and picking up their phones to outsource chores and jobs they don’t want to do themselves.
Community platform Airtasker has compiled a list of suburbs where users are most likely to advertise certain jobs, of the 35,000 tasks published to the app each week.
Cleaning is the most popular job with 148,591 cleaning tasks posted across the country this year to date.

Other popular categories on the platform include removalists (122,140), handyman jobs (93,961), gardening (48,043), tech support (31,936) and painting (20,054).
Users living in Surry Hills were more likely to post a task on the app with Bondi Beach, Paddington, Parramatta, Randwick and Manly making the top 10 list of outsourcing suburbs in Australia.
In the cleaning and painting categories, Surry Hills residents were again the top outsourcers while those living in Bondi Beach and Parramatta were more likely to advertise for a removalist.
The differences between Sydney suburbs is found in the gardening category with suburbs in the Hills District topping the list for NSW.
Those in Baulkham Hills, Kellyville and Castle Hill asked for gardening help while Surry Hills and Bondi Beach didn’t make the list.
Airtasker founder and CEO Tim Fung says they have recently seen a surge in tech support and job hunting ads while drone services is an emerging market.
“Things like drone repairs, drone photography, getting a drone out of a tree,” Fung said.
“It’s definitely interesting.
“We even see lots of tasks for getting spiders out of houses and removing Snapchat filters”.
Fung says despite the data on suburbs and jobs, it’s hard to get an idea of an “average” Airtasker and “age isn’t really a thing” with backpackers and semi-retirees both outsourcing and fulfilling jobs.
“They clearly seem to be hipster suburbs where things take off quicker,” Fung said.
“Surry Hills is definitely a younger cohort of people so there’s definitely an aged skew there.”
