Splitsville: John Singleton separates from seventh wife

Less than a year after advertising guru, entrepreneur and loveable larrikin John Singleton married the seventh love of his life, the pair have separated.

Less than a year after advertising guru, entrepreneur and loveable larrikin John Singleton married the seventh love of his life, the pair have separated.

Singleton confirmed to the Sunday Telegraph his marriage to Sarah Warry - the woman almost half his age who fell for his wicked sense of humour and romantic text messaging - had ended.

“Everyone was right and we were wrong”, he said. “It is not the first time I have made a mistake and won’t be the last. I know I am half mad but mostly the other half makes up for it. Sometimes not”.

Singleton says he has no regrets.

Previously telling the Sunday Telegraph that 44-year-old Warry, a Central Coast radio identity, was the woman who he shared sunsets with, said that sometimes “sunsets aren’t enough”.

“I thought it was time to look at sunsets but there are only so many sunsets you can enjoy before you go on the repeat button”.

“She’s a lovely girl but I’m not lovely, the sunset changed, I got sick of looking at sunsets. At the end of the day you don’t stay married when you’re not happy,” he said.

“Living together you come to realise you have different lifestyles that don’t align. Couples would relate.

“How many married couples stay together for the kids or so they don’t lose their house or security? How many of my mates and associates last over 50 years? Half get divorced and remarry.

“Of the 50 percent who stay married, 90 per cent play around and 10 per cent lose interest. It’s a dopey pledge ‘till death do us part’.

“When you no longer enjoy it, split.”

Circumspect about his next marriage beyond his seventh, Singleton, now 82, joked his next wedding wouldn’t be until his 100th birthday.

“Stay tuned. In the meantime I’m doing a new show called ‘Divorced at Second Sight’.Out of the blue I realised that Married At First Sight was not my caper. Who knows it might be a blockbuster success.

Singleton conceded he used humour to get through difficult times, declaring: “I love divorces and horses and I don’t win at either. I’m a nose in front on divorces.”

He said that rather than “the usual mutual respect thing, asking for privacy at this difficult time”, he prefers to “bag” himself. “It’s harmless to all”.

He certainly can’t be accused of not giving marriage a good go.

“My perfect marriage was to my first wife Margaret,” he said.

The pair “went steady” from 15 until early 20’s and had their son Jack.

“Sadly we divorced after 17 fantastic years because I handled the first glimpses of success so badly,” the multimillionaire conceded.

“I tried to get back with Margaret many times and she wouldn’t, my only regret”.

Singo then married Australia’s first supermodel Maggie Eckardt, then former Miss World, Belinda Green, with whom he had two daughters, Jessie and Sally.

Next was a “short-lived marriage” to television journalist Liz Hayes.

Singo had a long relationship with Jennifer Murrant, with whom he had a son, Joe and daughter, Hannah.

He then married prominent divorce lawyer Julie Martin “yes a divorce lawyer”, and had three daughters, Dawn, Summer and Daisy.

Singo is currently living with one of his daughters, spending time with his grandchildren and recovering from shoulder surgery.

He’s focused on growing his empire on the Central Coast where he has lived for more than 20 years.

He’s proud of the Strawberry Hill Stud which he built into a powerful racing and breeding institution and recently sold to Coolmore.

Then there’s his Saddles Restaurant at Mt White, which was voted one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world by Conde Nast.

Singo has also designed and built the first high-rise in Gosford which now houses Gosford’s first steak house at the Railway Hotel and he owns the Elanora Hotel, one of the most successful pubs in Australia.

He’s currently “in the middle of building a 10 star hotel” at Mt White, to be known as Grand Saddles Lodge that’s expected to be completed this time next year.

Recently he saw the completion of Ravello, his housing development at Gosford and four other major building projects.

His partnership with the Restom Group has seen the building of 16 ultra modern dental clinics on the Central Coast, Newcastle and Regional areas of NSW.

Singo has a tight knit team “which I’ve had forever”.

“I am terrible at marriages, but my friendship and business partnerships are real,” he said.

“It’s time for God to stop blessing weddings and spend more time on people who need it. John and Yoko are my only religion”.

In his down time, and a little less on the radar, the entrepreneur works with Bill Crews and the Exodus Foundation on a daily basis - the team that helps nourish the hungry, care for rough sleepers and helps vulnerable kids break the poverty cycle.

“We have to give more than we take,” Singo says.

“That’s what makes me feel good. It’s something we all need to do more.”

Warry was contacted by the Sunday Telegraph but did not comment on the separation.
