John Singleton’s ardent pursuit of the station manager of Gosford community radio station CoastFM963 is upsetting some Central Coast locals who feel the ad legend may be exerting a little too much influence over station content.
At the start of the year Singleton, 81, started pursuing Sarah Warry, who is said to be less than half the multi-millionaire’s age.
Sources last week said sparks between the couple were flying in February, just weeks after Singleton asked his previous girlfriend Kim Dennis, a former a sales exec at his Macquarie Radio Network, to move out of his Mt White property and horse stud.
After putting that property on the market in July, Singleton sold the property to Coolmore Stud for $30 million.
He picked up an additional $15 million for his horse stock at auction. (The combined $45 million is well down on the $100 million he claimed he was seeking for the package however).
Mother-of-two Warry is believed to have separated from her long-term partner, a tradesman, late last year.
Fans of CoastFM say Singleton’s fingerprints are now evident at the station which is run by some 70 volunteer staff.
After winding up his own media interests in 2019, the idle businessman, who is worth $800 million, became patron of the station after being approached by Warry at the Gosford Railway Hotel and asked to invest in the community enterprise.
Since forging the alliance, Singleton’s former employee Alan Jones has appeared on the station.
Last week a station insider told this column: “It’s been a dark time for the station. A lot of good people who volunteer are in difficult positions. They are too scared to say anything or complain. They feel their little station is being influenced by the big end of town.”
Neither Singleton nor Warry responded to our request for comment yesterday.
