Severe winds cause flight and train chaos across Sydney

A person has died, others have been hospitalised, dozens of flights have been cancelled and trains delayed, homes are without power and a roof has blown off a building, as wild winds lash Sydney and a severe weather warning is issued for the state.
Winds of up to 100km/h across Sydney have caused an aluminium roof to blow off a building in Campbelltown in western Sydney, with police blocking off the Moore Oxley Bypass where the sheeting lays.
Emergency services, including police and NSW fire and rescue crews were called to the building before 1pm on Monday and remain on site.
It comes following the death of a woman after a tree fell on a holiday park cabin she was sleeping at in the state’s south.
The 63-year-old woman’s body was discovered in the wreckage of a destroyed cabin at Tasman Holiday Parks Merool on the Murray in Moama, after a tree fell and landed on the riverfront accommodation.
A bushfire has also broken at out along the Princes Hwy south of Sydney, battered by wind gusts of up to 89km/h.
One southbound lane of traffic remains closed at Maddens Plains, Bulli in the Illawarra region where the blaze has raging on Monday morning.
Illawarra and Shoalhaven on the south – east coast are bracing for extreme fire danger with hot, dry and windy conditions expected to intensify.
A woman has also been injured after a tree came down on a car she and another female passenger were driving in and trapped the pair.
The tree came down while the pair were parked in the vehicle parked on a driveway on Brigalow Ave. Both women have been transported to hospital.
Dozens of flights out of Sydney have been cancelled with high winds battering the east coast.
Sydney Airport is using just one of its three runways due to high winds, with Qantas cancelling at least 25 flights departing Sydney Airport and Virgin Australia cancelling 13 flights out of Sydney.
Jetstar has also cancelled 10 flights departing Sydney Airport and two Rex flights have been cancelled.
On Monday afternoon the NSW SES confirmed a total of 353 call outs for the Sydney Metropolitan area, 409 fallen trees and 109 damaged buildings across the state, and issued a severe weather warning and encouraged residents across the state to secure lose items and move away from trees.
“Sever weather persists in the southeast today. Expect damaging winds in areas including Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Batemans Bay, Eden, Katoomba, Canberra, Goulburn, Cooma, Yass, and Thredbo.
The wild weather – which first hit the state on Sunday night has resulted in damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h across the Sydney Metropolitan, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, Blue Mountains and Hunter areas.
The “peak of the risk is mid afternoon” on Monday according to the Bureau of Meteorology, with wind gusts of up to 110km/h possible across elevations above 500m.
Locations which may continue to be affected into the evening include Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Batemans Bay, Eden, Katoomba, Oberon, Canberra, Goulburn, Cooma, Yass and Thredbo.
Rail passengers are being warned that train services have been impacted by a power supply issue at Granville. Some services on the T2 Inner West-Leppington rail line and the T5 Cumberland line are either skipping stations or have been cancelled.
“Trains may stop on platforms or between stations for longer than normal while the incident is ongoing”, a statement on the Transport for NSW website stated at 1:30pm.
Transport for NSW is recommending passengers be alert for service and platform changes during the PM peak hour.
