Revealed: Where King Charles and Camilla will visit on Australian tour

One of the King’s closest royal aides is believed to have been in Australia to map out a tour which is a scaled-down version of what it would have been prior to the King’s cancer diagnosis.

The official itinerary for King Charles and Queen Camilla’s whirlwind tour of Australia has been finalised with the couple understood to be visiting both Sydney and Canberra.

It is understood one of the King’s closest royal aides has been in Australia to map out the trip, which has been scaled back from what it may have been prior to the King’s cancer diagnosis.

Sources have also told The Saturday Telegraph that health concerns have meant the King will not be doing all-day events with time set aside for rest.

While details are closely guarded, it is understood a visit to the newly renovated NSW Parliament House is still on the agenda.

More than $22 million has been poured into the mould-infested building – a much-needed facelift that was inspired in anticipation of a royal visit as part of the Bicentenary of the NSW Legislative Council.

The Sydney-leg will also include a visit to a major city attraction such as the Sydney Opera House.

Canberra sources familiar with the itinerary say the couple will also be hosted at a formal reception in Canberra where they will be welcomed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

It is not clear if the reception will be held at Parliament House, but it is understood all premiers will be invited to attend.

Plans for a possible royal visit to mark the bicentenary of the NSW Legislative Council began in 2021 with former Legislative Council president Matthew Mason-Cox later meeting with the then Prince Charles in person at Balmoral to discuss a possible visit.

The hour-long chat followed the parliament making official inquiries through the NSW Governor to the princes’s private secretary of the desirability of a visit in 2024 to celebrate the 200 year anniversary of the Council given the Prince had officiated at its 150th anniversary on behalf of Queen Elizabeth.

“We were advised at the last minute that the prince was willing to meet us for a personal briefing for the bicentenary and potential visit,” Mason-Cox recalled, “and so we got a flight up to Edinburgh”.

The meeting, which occurred six days before the Queen died in Scotland, occurred at the King’s country estate in Balmoral.

“We chatted for about an hour. He was very impressive. We spoke about a whole range of things. In terms of Australia, he reflected on his time before here.”

Mason-Cox, who is from Wagga Wagga, said the King noted how he had visited the town during his visit to Australia for the opening of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

He said he remembered visiting the town and how he had had ‘lovely time in Wagga’,” Mason-Cox said.

After visiting Balmoral, Mason-Cox organised for former premier Gladys Berejiklian to write to ex-prime minister Scott Morrison to extend a formal invitation.

Given the time constraints, it is unclear if the couple will have time to visit the bush on this trip or accept invitations to The Everest and Melbourne Cup.

An official announcement about the trip is expected as soon as this week.
