THE SYDNEY train strike that is predicted to cost the state $100 million could be called off as soon as Monday after union bosses finally met with Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

NSW Union boss Mark Morey and the combined rail unions this morning met with Mr Constance in a lock up meeting that went for more than an hour.

While Mr Morey said there was “still work to be done”, for the time since they announced they would be striking on January 29 a resolution seemed to be in sight with both the government and the union agreeing to spend the next 48 hours trying to come to and agreement on the unions pay and conditions package.

The union had been pushing for a 6 per cent pay increase for rail workers.

Mr Constance thanked the union for the “good faith” negotiations, but pressed a strike would be “in nobody’s interest”.

“The Minister acknowledged the NSW rail network is carrying more passengers than ever before,” Mr Morey said.

“This has been achieved in no small part due to the hard work and productivity of Sydney Trains and NSW trains workers.”

“We have agreed to keep working over the weekend and meet again on Monday to try and resolve this dispute.”
