A PROPERTY developer from Woolloomooloo has been found dead in his prison cell two days after he was arrested at Sydney Airport over a $20 million cocaine shipment.

Corrective services guards found Domitrios Mavris, 48, deceased in the cell of a Surry Hills corrections facility just after 6.30pm on Friday.

Mavris was arrested as he touched down in Sydney on Wednesday night over his alleged role in importing 59kg of cocaine inside container loads of frozen fish from Peru.

He was charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug and the matter was mentioned briefly in Central Local Court on Thursday.

He did not appear in court where bail was denied and the matter was adjourned until today.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

Australian Border Force officers stopped two containers from Peru on March 24, when an x-ray revealed anomalies in their refrigeration units.

Officers removed the walls of the container to find dozens of packages taped into cavities.
