The husband of a seven-months’ pregnant woman who was viciously bashed on Tuesday in an unprovoked attack on a Sydney street has praised the “hero” passers-by who came to her rescue.
Police released shocking footage of the attack, which shows the 26-year-old expectant mum walking along Wentworth Ave in Surry Hills when she is set upon by a woman just before 9am.
The victim, who was on her way to work, walked between Olivia Mahe and her partner — who had been fighting in the street just before the attack — when she was suddenly punched in the head as she passed.
The force of the blow was so severe it knocked a beanie off the pregnant woman’s head before she was repeatedly struck.
Thankfully, the woman’s husband revealed their unborn baby was “healthy and unharmed” after the horrific attack.
“We thank the Surry Hills Police for their assistance, the medical team at the RPA Hospital for their continued care and the first responders,” the man said in a statement to 2GB.
“You are heroes.”
In the footage, Mahe — from Mt Druitt — is seen landing several blows to the victim and pulling her hair as she cowers in the street. She was then pushed into a power pole and forced into the gutter by Mahe.

A man who was passing by the shocking scene immediately stepped in to try to stop Mahe’s attack.
An off-duty junior policeman, seen on the video waling past as the attack starts, managed to intervene and hold back Mahe before leading her from the scene.
The distraught woman is then helped to her feet by the first passer-by, who assists her as she walks away.
She was taken to hospital for treatment to bruising and swelling to her face.
Mahe was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and remanded in custody for a later court appearance.
Detective Chief Inspector Adam Johnson expressed shock over the attack yesterday and said police had so far been unable to explain what provoked it.
“It was an unprovoked, violent, confronting attack,” he said. “It was a totally unprovoked, unwarranted, unnecessary attack.”
“The lady is currently under observation, she’s got bruising and swelling to her face and she also lost a clump of hair.”
He said the off-duty officer who came to her aid is just three weeks into the job and was heading into work on his day off.
“It’s a bit of an introduction to policing,” he said.
