Postcode Wars on film: Teens pull, machetes, hammers from school bags, at Harris Park train station

Shocking video of Sydney high school students facing off with machetes, knives and hammers has emerged, as new statistics highlighted the seriousness of the city’s Postcode Wars problem.

Machete-wielding school students go toe-to-toe

Shocking video of high school students facing off armed with machetes, knives and hammers at a train station has emerged online, as new statistics showing that weapons are being wielded by youths at the highest levels in five years highlighted the seriousness of the Postcode Wars problem.

A total of 103 youths in NSW were found guilty of unlawfully obtaining or possessing a weapon in the year to September 2023, a 19 per cent jump on the year before and a 40 per cent increase on 2018, according to the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.

It comes as The Daily Telegraph can reveal NSW Police are investigating the video that shows students from different suburbs in Sydney’s west at a pre-arranged fight in a carpark at Harris Park train station last year.

The footage - which only surfaced on social media in recent weeks - depicts multiple teenagers, some of them still in uniform, pulling huge weapons out of their school bags.

Thankfully the youths, believed to be from the suburbs of Cabramatta and Mt Druitt - two areas that have become fierce rivals as “Postcode Wars” have raged on the streets of Sydney in recent years - put the weapons away before anyone was fatally stabbed.

NSW Police are aware of the incident and are investigating, while a NSW Department of Education spokesman confirmed it was “now a police matter”.

As the footage showing the two rival groups begins, one of the youths can be seen walking into shot carrying a massive machete.

Next to him another of the other boys reaches into their backpack and pulls out a weapon of his own, waving it around while also screaming insults across the carpark to the rivals only a few metres away.

The camera then pans towards the Cabramatta group, several of whom are wearing maroon school jumpers and are themselves armed.

One teen can be seen holding a hammer, half hiding it up his shirt as the camera turns towards him.

As it seems an all out war fight scene is about to unfold a youth has to be held back by a friend, who clearly realises that if something kicks off the weapons in sight could result in multiple serious injuries - if not multiple deaths.

Standing in a public carpark in plain sight of passing trains or commuters walking to their cars, some of the teens move to diffuse the situation.

“Put them back in your bag,” one teen says, moving to diffuse the situation.

Others then join in seemingly realising that any number of people on a passing train or who are walking from the train station to their cars could see them and call the police.

“Put it away, put it away, put it away lad,” another urges his friend.

“Keep it clean,” one teen can be heard to say.

Just before the footage ends one youth, unarmed, can be seen moving towards the rival side and shadow boxing, seemingly intent on carrying out some violence.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said: “NSW Police Force have been made aware of the video circulating online.

“Officers attached to Youth Command and Police Transport Command are making inquiries into the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
