A man has been rushed to hospital overnight after a workplace accident on a boat moored at Port Botany overnight.
A man, aged in his 40s, was working on-board a commercial boat when he was hit by a piece of equipment about 12.30am, sending police and paramedics rushing to the scene.
Three ambulance crews, including a specialist medical team, arrived to find the worker with chest and abdominal injuries.
With the help of Police Rescue, paramedics used a crane to safely winch the man off the boat and onto the wharf, where he was treated briefly before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.
It’s believed the man was working on the ship’s deck when a heavy piece of equipment swung and hit him.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Lucky Phrachanh said the operation to move the man off the boat was “complex” but the worker was “lucky” to be alive.
“Paramedics worked closely with police rescue to assess and treat the patient before a complex operation was undertaken to remove him from the vessel and transport him to hospital,” Insp Phrachanh said.
“The patient was treated for chest and abdominal injuries and transported to St Vincent‘s Hospital. In an environment like this his injuries could have been much greater – he is very lucky.
“This is a timely reminder to take care when at work – things can change in an instant.”
Inquiries into the incident continue.
