Poll results spur Josh Frydenberg to consider contesting Kooyong

Liberal Party sources say former treasurer Josh Frydenberg is reconsidering his recent decision not to run in his old seat of Kooyong at the next federal election.

‘He will be back’: Josh Frydenberg tipped to make political comeback

Liberal MPs believe former treasurer Josh Frydenberg is reconsidering his decision not to run in his old seat of Kooyong at the next federal election.

In September Mr Frydenberg disappointed his supporters in the once-staunch Liberal seat when he announced he would not attempt to win it back from Teal Monique Ryan.

Instead he announced he would accept the position of chairman of the investment bank Goldman Sachs.

But News Corp has spoken to a number of Liberals who said they believe that in recent weeks Mr Frydenberg has begun to reconsider his position.

Since the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7, the former treasurer has been busy behind the scenes working to rally Australian leaders to condemn the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Australia.

News Corp has been told that in the period since the attacks he has been approached by senior members of the Jewish community to reconsider his position.

He has also been reapproached by Liberals telling him he should think again.

It is understood in recent weeks the former treasurer has also been given a second poll that shows the seat can be won back by the Liberal Party at the next election.

Earlier this year Mr Frydenberg commissioned a poll that showed that he was the best placed candidate to regain the seat from Ms Ryan.

The Sunday Telegraph has been told the second poll is even more favourable to the Liberal Party.

One MP said there was no doubt that in recent weeks Mr Frydenberg has been “kicking the tyres” on the idea of attempting to reboot his career.

“He’s definitely been up and about lately,” the MP said.

Nominations for the seat close in mid-January.

Mr Frydenberg declined to comment.
