Police investigate death of seven-week-old baby at St Marys

An investigation is under way into the suspicious death of a baby boy at a home in Sydney’s west.

Homicide Squad detectives are assisting local investigators as they try to determine exactly what happened in the lead up to a seven-week-old being found unresponsive at a home in St Marys at 4.15am on Saturday.

Neighbours on the quiet street said they were woken by the flashing lights of police cars and ambulances, and were shocked to hear that a young child had died.

“There’s a young couple that live there, probably in their mid to late 20s, I think they moved in two or so years ago,” one local said.

“On Saturday I woke up to flashing lights, police cars and ambulances everywhere, then my neighbour who owns the granny flat out the back told me that the newborn baby had died.

“He said there had been nothing out of the ordinary, it is all very shocking.”

Another neighbour said he heard a “squabble” over 24 hours after the baby was pronounced dead.

An property owner on the same street was working in his yard as police investigators and forensic specialists inspected the home next door.

“I knew the young couple, he is a nice guy, the dad,” he said.

“The mum is really nice too (although) there was a bit of shouting this morning between (her) and another person who was there.

“I heard yelling. There was a squabble.”

He said he was confused as to why investigators were still removing items from the home in yellow bags.

The occasional resident was seen leaving their home on an otherwise eerily quiet street on Saturday while police “made a few trips in and out.”

In a statement, NSW Police said the young boy was rushed to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead by could not be saved.

“Around 4.15am on Saturday 27 May 2023, emergency services were called to a home on Stanley Street, St Marys, following reports a baby was unresponsive,” the statement read.

“NSW Ambulance paramedics performed CPR before conveying the seven-week-old to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead; however, the baby boy could not be revived.

“With the assistance of the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command have established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the baby‘s death.

“A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.”
