Sydney is staring down the barrel of an economic crisis as the price of power, groceries and housing spiral ever higher.
Meanwhile, Europe teeters on the brink of a devastating war as an increasingly aggressive power in Asia menaces our region.
The words could apply to today and to 90 years ago, when Sydney was also tested by global tensions and financial doldrums.
Then, as now, faced with such monumental problems, our city and its people needed something to latch on to, something that would instill belief and hope when all data pointed the other way.
Enter John Bradfield, a behemoth of vision, tenacity and ingenuity.
In 1932, Bradfield gave Sydney his crowning masterpiece, The Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Nine years under construction, it was the culmination of a near-fifty year obsession that overcame many of the obstacles progress encounters today.
Bradfield, too, had to defy blundering bureaucrats, scheming politicians, ruthless business rivals and sudden funding reversals.
But he persisted and our beloved coathanger will forever stand as testament to his resillience and determination. For the past nine years, The Daily Telegraph has championed Bradfield’s success and held up this iconic structure as a glittering example of the Emerald City’s potential.
In 2022 Future Sydney: The Bradfield Oration again seeks to inspire Sydney’s leaders to dream bigger.
This year the nation backed a new leader and it is fitting that our proud Sydney PM Anthony Albanese will deliver the Bradfield Oration.
Months before the state election, we will also hear Premier Dominic Perrottet and Opposition Leader Chris Minns deliver their competing visions for Sydney.
And we’ll hear from our city’s most dynamic business leaders and thought leaders who will debate how our city should navigate its future.
Sydney is well positioned to take advantage of the huge changes that are impacting the world and The Daily Telegraph is committed to supporting this great city on its journey into the future.
