A deal to build a luxury, five-star hotel facing onto Western Sydney’s Parramatta Square has been signed, in what has been described as the next leap forward for Sydney’s second CBD.
Holdmark Property Group has signed a management agreement with IHG Hotels & Resorts to deliver the InterContinental Parramatta, with the major development set to open in 2025.
The new hotel, facing on to one of Australia’s largest urban renewals projects in Parramatta Square, will include 200 guestrooms, a restaurant and rooftop bar, pool, gym, wellness centre and more than 900 sqm of meeting space for functions.
The tower will also include offices and a ground floor retail precinct filled with high-end shops, opening on to the square.
“It’ll no longer be just about the InterContinental on Macquarie Street in the Sydney CBD, but on Macquarie Street in Parramatta,” Business Western Sydney executive director David Borger told The Telegraph.
“The Intercontinental coming to Parramatta is a vote of confidence in the growing visitor economy of Sydney’s Central City. Parramatta is now a destination for business, holidays, family reunions, and major events and that means we need more accommodation.
Mr Borger said the new hotel would be in a prime location within walking distance of Parramatta’s historic Eat Street, Bankwest Stadium, and the future Powerhouse Museum.
“It will also be on the doorstep of light rail, future metro and the heavy rail making it a great base to explore greater Sydney in all directions,” he said.
The project is currently being finalised by the state government’s gateway determination process – reserved for large-scale developments – while it is simultaneously the subject of a design competition with three architects and a development application with Parramatta Council.
Those behind the move say the internationally-renowned hotel will employ more than 360 permanent workers, while feeding a further 1000 indirect jobs in the area.
Construction is set to create an additional 800 construction jobs and 200 subcontractor roles.
Parramatta’s first five-star hotel, The Skye Hotel Suites on Hunter Street, opened in 2017.
