POLICE suspect high roller and money launderer Peter Hoang was executed on the orders of a Sydney crime boss who, alongside a brash young contract killer, is responsible for at least six gangland killings.

Several police sources say Hoang, 38, owed substantial amounts of money to the kingpin — whose alias is The Mercenary — at the time he was killed just after midnight on September 6, 2014.

The Daily Telegraph has previously revealed how police believe he and the assassin, known in crime circles as The Kid, are behind at least half a dozen brazen contract killings since 2014.

On the street sources claim the young psychopath may have killed up to 10 people and has become notorious for being willing to kill anyone if the price is right.

State coroner Les Mabbutt yesterday referred Hoang’s suspected murder to the NSW Police’s unsolved homicide unit. But it is widely suspected among law enforcement that the hit was organised by the crime boss.

“The method of how the murder was carried out … that’s how (The Kid) kills people. It wasn’t a robbery, (Hoang) owed (The Mercenary) money,” a source said.

Police suspect The Mercenary ordered his gun-for-hire to carry out the hit but do not have any hard evidence to prove it, with detectives “frustrated” by people close to Hoang for “refusing to disclose” information.

The court heard how Hoang was most likely lured to his death by a “criminal associate” on Dunmore St at Croydon Park.

It is believed the crime boss gave substantial amounts of money to the high roller so he could launder it but he ended up gambling a lot of it away.

“To date the investigation and its approach to the differing intelligence information that suggested any one of the multiple groups or individuals could have been responsible, has not been able to link any of them together or corroborate them to more substantial facts such as the deceased’s last movements,” Detective Sergeant Peter Rudens said in a statement tendered during yesterday’s inquest.

During the short inquest into Hoang’s death, the court heard how the 38-year-old was most likely lured to his death by “a criminal associate” he had been communicating with on his encrypted BlackBerry earlier on the night of his death.

On the night of his suspected murder, Hoang had dinner with two friends at a Surry Hills Thai restaurant before driving to Croydon Park McDonald’s in Sydney’s inner west.

He drove to nearby Dunmore St to meet an associate but when he got out of his Nissan Skyline GT-R, an assassin ran from a unit block and shot him five times, leaving him dead on the footpath.

The inquest also heard Hoang had gambled in excess of $90 million in the six years before his death and was also preparing to face a trial in Melbourne after he was found with $1.5 million cash suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

A brief of evidence tendered to the Coroner’s Court revealed Hoang was dressed head to toe in Louis Vuitton at the time of his death and police later found a bank cheque in Hoang’s name for $1.1 million on the coffee table of the Liverpool St unit he rented using cash.
