A woman waiting in the street for her husband to pick her up was last night in a coma in hospital after a car ploughed into her at a Central Coast car yard, sending her hurtling 9m through the air.

The 35-year-old mother, who is being treated at John Hunter Hospital, had just dropped off her car for a service on Johnson Rd in Tuggerah when she was struck about 8.40am yesterday morning.

She was left with severe head and internal injuries.

As she waited for her husband to pick her up outside the Nissan and Mazda service centre, the out-of-control Mitsubishi Lancer careered into her, throwing her into the neighbouring Coastwide Cars forecourt.

Mr Ratcliffe, who watched CCTV footage of the crash from his car dealership, said his rattled staff helped the woman before paramedics arrived and she was rushed by helicopter to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Mr Ratcliffe said four of his employees tried to deliver first aid to the woman who was “breathing OK” and coherent.

“Our staff were just trying to keep her OK because she was in a bad way.” he said.

“It was pretty horrific … very nasty. Hopefully she’ll be OK.”

Mr Ratcliffe said the car tore through Coastwide Cars’ front fence before damaging three parked cars and pushing one with enough force over about 10m to roll it onto its roof.

Mr Ratcliffe said the driver and his female passenger “just rolled out of the car, it was up in the air … and fell to the floor and (they) were a bit shell-shocked”.

“My car’s a write off and there’s another two cars that I’ll have to repair,” he said.
