Passers-by chase attacker after woman’s brutal sex assault in Liverpool park
A brutal sex attacker was chased down the street after his victim’s terrified screams alerted a group of people to the vicious assault in a park in Sydney’s south-west last night.
A brutal sex attacker was chased down the street after his victim’s terrified screams alerted a group of people to the assault in Sydney’s south-west last night.
Police said the group lost the man after he fled into a laneway and made his escape.
The 51-year-old woman was walking along a track in Lighthorse Park, Liverpool, shortly before midnight when she observed a man nearby watching her.
As she approached the stairs to Newbridge Road, the man began walking towards her, before punching her in the face several times.
The man continued to physically assault the woman, and then sexually assaulted her.
The woman began screaming, alerting people nearby, who chased the offender up the stairs onto Newbridge Road, onto Terminus Street, and then a laneway onto George Street where they lost sight of him.
Police from Liverpool Police Area Command attended and commenced inquiries. A crime scene was established and examined by forensic specialists.
The woman was taken to Liverpool Hospital with facial injuries including lacerations, bruising, and damage to her teeth.
“The attack itself was cowardly,” Detective Inspector Dean Johnstone told reporters in Liverpool on Monday.
“It’s a secluded area within Liverpool.”
He urged people not to be out alone at night and said detectives were pursuing the attacker.
Footage recovered by police shows a man entering a nearby dentist’s carpark on Terminus Street where he changed into lightcoloured clothes and shorts before calmly walking from the scene with his old clothes in a plastic bag.
They are canvassing the area for more CCTV footage to help identify him.
Police are also urging anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
The man has been described as about 165-175cm tall, skinny build, dark skinned, wearing an orange/blue coloured hi-visibility fluoro jumper, long pants and boots.
