Deputy Labor leader Richard Marles said Syria had been gripped by tragedy for the past 10 years, with the war-torn Middle Eastern nation ravaged by multiple conflicts.
"I think all of us are deeply concerned that what we are witnessing is the next chapter in Syria's misery," he told ABC Radio on Monday.
Kulwinder Singh, 41, has pleaded not guilty in the NSW Supreme Court to murdering Parwinder Kaur, 32, on December 2, 2013, at their Rouse Hill home.
Ms Kaur, who sustained burns to 90 per cent of her body in the petrol-fuelled blaze, was seen by neighbours on fire, slowing moving down the driveway with her husband behind her.
The Crown alleges Singh was responsible for her death, while he told police "she did it to herself" when he was upstairs in their bedroom before he rushed down after hearing her scream.
His lawyer submitted the "tragic accident" occurred when Ms Kaur was seeking some sort of attention.
It is currently 20C in Sydney's CBD with a forecast top of 23C.
A man will face court next month after he was allegedly found with a number of stolen prescriptions while being arrested after causing a disturbance at Canterbury Hospital at the weekend.
The man had been admitted to the emergency department just after 8pm on Saturday when he began swearing and yelling aggressively at staff and patients.
He also allegedly threatened staff and attempted to assault security in the ambulance bay of the hospital.
Police allege they found the man in possession of a number of prescriptions, believed to be taken from a medical centre in Campsie.
The 38-year-old was arrested and granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court on November 5.
ANZ chief executive Shayne Elliott has admitted lenders have not properly explained why their rates do not keep pace with the tumbling cash rate.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg on Monday announced the four majors will be probed over their failure to pass on Reserve Bank rate cuts in full.
"The inquiry is a good opportunity to provide facts in what is a complex space and we hope it will provide the public with renewed confidence in the way their home loans are priced," Mr Elliott said.
Centre Alliance's Rebekha Sharkie has put legislation to parliament to lift the age from 10 to 14, backed by independent Zali Steggall.
"We do not let 10-year-olds drive cars, drink alcohol, have Facebook accounts or indeed vote," Ms Sharkie told parliament today.
"We impose these limits because we as a society decided that young children are not capable of making rational decisions.
"And yet as the law currently stands we can hold a 10-year-old criminally responsible for their actions."
That law isn't consistent with medical and social science evidence about children's mental capacity to understand what they are doing is a crime, she said.
Jesse Vinaccia, 26, was found guilty of child homicide in June after he shook or manhandled 17-week-old Kaleb in January 2016 while his then-girlfriend Erin Baylis-Clarke was at work.
Vinaccia had moved in with the young mother and her newborn only a few weeks before the incident.
Kaleb died in hospital from severe bleeding of the brain on January 30, a week after Vinaccia found the child unresponsive in his cot.
After the baby's death, he told police he had "put him down in the cot a bit hard" after arguing with the boy's father via Facebook.
