NSW records 244 Covid case, nears 90pc double-vaxxed goal

NSW has recorded 244 new cases of Covid-19 and one death as the state hurtles towards a major pandemic goal.

NSW has recorded 244 new cases of Covid-19 and one death as the state approaches its next vaccine milestone.

Health officials on Sunday said 89.7 per cent of NSW people aged over 16 have now had two doses of a coronavirus vaccine.

Almost 94 per cent of this group of people have had one dose.

There are 269 people in hospital with the virus, with 52 people in intensive care.

270 new Covid cases on Saturday

NSW recorded 270 new cases and three new deaths on Friday as Australia reaches the 80 per cent double vaccine milestone.

The three deaths includes a woman in her 30s from Western Sydney who died at Westmead Hospital. The woman was unvaccinated and had an underlying health condition.

A man in his 60s died at Wollongong Hospital. He was also not vaccinated and had underlying health conditions.

A man in his 50s from Western Sydney died at Liverpool Hospital — he had one dose of the vaccine and also had underlying health conditions.

There have been 592 deaths in NSW since the pandemic began.

There are currently 270 cases are in hospital with 55 in intensive care and 27 on ventilation.

It comes as 80 per cent of Australians over the age of 16 have now been fully vaccinated.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the milestone was “magnificent”.

“How good is that,” he said.

“There’s now been 35 million doses. This has been a true Australian national effort.

“Cities and suburbs, towns and hospitals and pharmacies. Aged care facilities and disability home, (and) there’s been the pop up clinics. We’ve been in remote Indigenous communities, army barracks and stadiums … all kinds of locations, all across our amazing country.

“A big thanks goes to our nurses, doctors, our healthcare workers and pharmacists … everyone who’s been involved in this extraordinary effort including local councils and state and territory governments.”

In NSW 89.4 per cent of people over 16 are fully vaccinated and 93.8 per cent have had the first dose.

NSW is also surging ahead in the 12-15 age group, with 67.4 fully vaccinated and 79.9 had their first dose.

The Hunter New England LHD continues to see the highest case numbers with 73 of yesterdays cases.

Thirty-nine are from South Western Sydney, 37 are from the Mid North Coast, 23 are from Sydney, 21 from Murrumbidgee, 19 from Western Sydney, 10 from South Eastern Sydney, 10 from Western NSW, six in the Central Coast, six in Northern Sydney, five in Illawarra and Shoalhaven, five in Nepean Blue Mountains, four in Southern NSW, three in Northern NSW, one in the Far West and eight are yet to be assigned an area.
