Nowra, South Coast: major sea rescue underway after yacht’s distress call

A major sea operation is underway 150km off the south coast near Nowra after a yacht activated a distress signal as it takes on water in severe weather conditions.

A major sea rescue operation is currently underway off the south coast to save two people stranded on a yacht.

About 1pm on Monday officers from the Marine Area Command and Australian Defence Force were notified a 19m yacht had activated a distress beacon 150km offshore from Nowra.

The vessel is believed to have sustained a mechanical issue and is taking on water.

According to emergency services, marine officers are expected to with reach the vessel and its passengers at about midnight.

There are no reports of any injuries.

No further information is available at this stage.
