Nepalese national arrested at Sydney Airport after double fatal crash near Cooma

The alleged driver of a sedan which lost control and crashed en route to the Snowy Mountains, killing two people including a nurse who live-streamed part of the road trip, has been arrested at Sydney Airport trying to leave the country.

The alleged driver of a car that crashed near Cooma killing two people, including a nurse who live-streamed part of the road trip, has been arrested at Sydney Airport trying to leave the country.

Nepalese national Sagar Bhattarai, 22, was allegedly behind the wheel of a grey Mazda 6 when it lost control, rolled and hit a tree about 3.40am on Sunday, July 28.

Five people were in the car as it travelled south on the Monaro Hwy outside of Bunyan.

Samikshya Subedi, a 22-year-old Nepalese nurse who was sitting in the back of the car, was thrown metres from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Gopal Bhandari was in the front passenger seat at the time of the crash and also died.

Bhattarai and a 19-year-old passenger were flown to Canberra Hospital with head injuries while the other passenger was transported by road ambulance to Cooma Hospital with superficial head cuts.

Hours earlier, Ms Subedi had been live-streaming the group’s journey to the Snowy Mountains. They were filmed singing along to music and talking to each other.

About 7pm last night, Bhattarai was stopped at Sydney Airport and arrested while attempting to board a flight out of the country.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with seven offences including two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and two counts of cause bodily harm by misconduct.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today where he was formally not granted bail.

He was remanded into custody to appear before Queanbeyan Local Court on September 27.
