Nathan Cleary has added fuel to the Mary Fowler romance fire after he was spotted at the Matildas’ match in Perth amidst rumours he is dating the soccer star.
The NRL superstar posed for a selfie with local fans at Optus Stadium yesterday, the venue where the Matildas played an Olympic qualifier match against the Philippines, with Fowler in the starting lineup.
The Penrith Panthers halfback was among the 60,000 fans to watch Australia’s 8-0 victory with Fowler, who has gained international recognition after the FIFA Women’s World Cup, scoring the opening goal in the 15th minute.
Rumours have been spreading rapidly about a potential romance between the two star athletes since they were spotted together on two occasions following the Matildas impressive performance at the World Cup.
Penrith locals were quick to catch a glimpse of the 25-year-old NRL player taking a scenic stroll along the River Nepean with the 20-year-old star striker, with exclusive images shared with The Daily Telegraph.
Just prior the pair were spotted together sharing an ice cream following a promotional event by Adidas, who sponsor both athletes.
Cleary’s Perth trip comes a month after the champion half led his team to victory in the NRL Grand Final against the Brisbane Broncos, in what was called an “inspirational comeback” after scoring the winning try in a heart-stopping 26-24 win.
This saw Cleary win the Clive Churchill medal for a best on-ground performance.
Although Cleary and Fowler follow each other on Instagram, neither have confirmed the claims or posted any photos together.
In a radio interview last month on the Kyle and Jackie O Show, Cleary was ambushed with an on the spot question asking if he is dating the Matildas superstar, to which he was quick to shut down it down.
“Nah, nah, we’re not going to get into that,” he said.
Unfortunately for Cleary his teammate Jarome Luai didn’t get the memo and was an open book when asked about the romance rumours that have taken Australia by storm.
Luai was first asked which Panthers player would be most likely to date a Matildas player, he responded with: “Nathan Cleary, shhh.”
