Evil in our Homes, Domestic violence epidemic

A man on bail for punching his wife in the face and threatening to kill her tried to stop her from giving evidence in court and planted a tracking device on her car.

Despite abusing his wife, and racking up four more serious domestic violence offences while on bail, Mohammed Ismail has escaped any jail time for his terrifying behaviour.

The 42-year-old told his wife she would “end up like Lametta” — referring to underworld figure Lametta Fadlallah who was shot dead in Revesby last year — if she left him.

Ismail was charged with common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and intimidation on October 21 last year, following a series of arguments with his wife earlier that month.

On October 11 the pair had a serious argument after Ismail was accused of cheating with another woman. He left the family home and returned the following morning.

Court documents revealed the pair began to fight about the cheating allegations again, when Ismail punched the woman in the face, connecting with her cheekbone.

On October 13, Ismail threw a full can of coke at his wife, narrowly missing her, after she went through his phone to look for proof of an affair.

He tried to embrace her during their argument, but she ordered he let her go.

This made him irate and he again punched her, this time connecting with her left eye.

Following the assault Ismail told the woman: “you’re going to be another Lametta”, and said that if she tried to sell the home or leave him he would kill her, according to court documents.

The woman contacted police and gave a statement detailing the abuse she said she had suffered.

Ismail was arrested and charged on October 21, however immediately offended again, ignoring the AVO that had been put in place to protect the woman.

Just six days later he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, act with intent to influence witness, stalk intimidate and install or use tracking device to locate person without consent.

He was again granted bail on these offences and ordered to stay away from the woman.

Ismail faced court for sentencing earlier this month, and despite the seriousness and repetition in his offending, escaped a full-time jail sentence.

He pleaded guilty to all of the offences, and was sentenced to 16 months in prison, but Magistrate Keisha Hopgood ordered he serve the term in the community by way of an intensive corrections order.

As part of the sentence he was ordered to stay away from the woman, and prohibited from using drugs or alcohol.
