There is nothing like a little low-key sporting rivalry to spice up a new romance.
Australia’s hottest new power couple — who we’ve dubbed Nath-ilda — showed off their sporting prowess and their growing affection for each other in a very friendly game of footy.
Actually, two different types of footy.
Making sure all is fair in love and war, NRL star Nathan Cleary came fully prepared with a league ball and a soccer ball for his match-up with new girlfriend, Matildas striker Mary Fowler.
In the cross-code one-on-one duel, Cleary managed to fend off some tough defence from Fowler in a tight soccer tussle, while Fowler wouldn’t be shown up, taking a catch on the full that any NRL fullback would be proud of.
The couple, believed to be staying together in Penrith, travelled to the local oval and battled it out for about an hour, exchanging a few friendly taunts and nudges.
The field was strangely void of onlookers, leaving the popular pair to some peace and quiet after a hectic few days in the limelight.
Fowler is believed to be enjoying a few days in the Panthers homeland before travelling to Cairns for Christmas with her family.
The down-to-earth megastar set tongues wagging when she flew into Sydney this week and was spotted sharing a kiss and embracing the Penrith captain.
Cleary said this week the obsession with his private life was something new to him.
“I haven’t had too many people look into my personal life. But it’s just what comes with it. It’s something that I can’t control,” he said.
“I just got to keep moving on and not read into it too much.”
Sources say Cleary is keen to watch Fowler’s game for Manchester City against Sam Kerr’s Chelsea on February 19 when the Panthers fly to the UK for the World Club Challenge.
Fowler is unlikely to be able to catch Cleary’s game against Wigan the next week as the Matildas have a game in Uzbekistan on the same day.
Footy fans might have to wait a few months for the next update.
