Police have described the alleged sexual assault of a woman by a meat cleaver-wielding intruder as “horrendous” and praised the woman for reporting the attack to police straight away.
NSW Police said on Monday the woman, 26, was inside her bedroom on Park Rd, Auburn at 6.35pm on Friday “when an unknown man entered her room armed with a meat clever”.
The alleged attacker was arrested inside Silverwater jail on Monday morning and has now been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, threatening to inflict harm with a weapon, sexual touching without consent and aggravated break-and-enter.
The 37-year-old Zetland man was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Tuesday.
“The man allegedly threatened the woman and sexually assaulted her, before leaving the unit,” police said in a statement.
The woman went to Auburn Police Station after the attack and officers began investigating. Specialist detectives from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad the took carriage of the matter under Strike Force Cinnibar.
“It’s horrendous, she’s in what she believes to be her secure home unit,” Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty said.
“Units are only secure the way people use them, so if you’re in a secure block and people are following you through, make sure you stop them and ask them where they’re going.
“These thankfully are very rare types of offences but the fact that the victim has come forward so quickly in this matter has enabled us to ensure that this person is arrested and before the courts so swiftly that he doesn’t have (the) opportunity again for other victims.”
