Man dead after coming off board at URBNSURF wave park

A man has died after being pulled unconscious from the water at Sydney’s new wave park at Olympic Park this afternoon.

Major incident in Sydney's new surf pool

A man has died after being pulled unconscious from the water at the URBNSURF wave pool in Homebush yesterday.

The man, a surfer in his 70s, came off his board at the wave park about 11.50am and failed to resurface.

Medical staff performed CPR on him at the scene before he was rushed to Concord Hospital in a critical condition, but he died a short time after arriving at the hospital.

Police are investigating the incident but believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the surfer’s death.

A spokeswoman for URBNSURF said the man suffered a “medical episode” while at the venue.

“URBNSURF has temporarily closed its Sydney Olympic Park facility after a guest suffered what is believed to be a medicalepisode on site,” she said.

“The URBNSURF team responded to provide support and care for the guest before paramedics arrived.

“Our main priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of our guests and staff and our thoughts are with them at this time.”

The park will remain closed until further notice. The facility was completely shut off to the public while police investigations continued.

Inside the near empty water park, two police officers in uniform also scanned the area as staff congregated near the lifeguardtower and packed away surf boards.

Earlier this month, NSW-origin hero Jarome Luai was dragged out of the water at the Blues’ recovery session at the man-made surf park.

The Panthers’ five-eighth admitted he “jumped the gun” and got himself into trouble as he was seen holding onto a lifeguard’s rescue tool, being pulled along the side of the wave pool to safety.

In June 2022, a man suffered a medical episode in the water at the URBNSURF wave park at Tullamarine near Melbourne.

The man was transferred to Royal Melbourne Hospital in critical condition.

The park was closed immediately following the incident.

More to come.
