A frustrated father allegedly gave his crying infant daughter brain and neck damage when he shook her in their southwest Sydney home.
The 25-year-old allegedly admitted to police he squeezed the four-week-old girl by the abdomen, shaking her back and forth at their Cartwright home on the night of November 8, a court heard.
The baby was still fighting for life with swelling on the brain and serious damage to her neck and ribs in The Children’s Hospital at Westmead on Wednesday night.
On the night of the alleged attack, the baby’s mother is understood to have taken a shower, after which she noticed something was wrong and rushed the baby to Liverpool Hospital.

The baby was suffering seizures by the time she arrived and was transferred to Westmead.
After being at his baby’s bedside, the girl’s father attended Parramatta Police Station on Tuesday where Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad detectives arrested him during an interview and charged him with recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm.
Doctors have been told the baby may not survive, in which case the man’s charges would likely be upgraded.
Court papers allege the attack happened some time between 5pm and 9pm.
In Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday, Magistrate Tim Keady said the father allegedly became frustrated at his child’s crying in the “extremely serious” case of domestic violence.
Prosecutors opposed bail on the basis the man had been in a position of authority at the time of the alleged attack and had made some admissions to police about the incident.
But Mr Keady granted bail on the conditions he not approach the hospital at Westmead, surrender his passport, report daily to police and live at his mother’s house in Glenfield.
A provisional apprehended violence order was also put in place to separate the father and daughter.
Paperwork for the man’s bail was still being finalised last night and he is expected to be released by Corrective Services today.
