A man has been charged after a four-hour standoff with the bomb squad on a busy road overpass, which forced the closure of major arterial roads in Sydney’s northwest this morning.
Officers were sent in before dawn when the man parked his ute across multiple lanes of Windsor Rd, at the James Ruse Drive overpass at Northmead, about 4.30am. They alleged the man indicated to them that he had an explosive device.
Windsor Rd and James Ruse Drive at Northmead, plus many surrounding residential street, were closed off for about four hours.
His allegedly erratic behaviour prompted a huge police response, with dozens of officers at the scene.
Bomb squad and specialist officers were called in and negotiated with the man, who was dressed in hi-vis workwear, before he surrendered about 9.30am and police arrested him.
The 50-year-old man was taken to Castle Hill Police Station and checked by ambulance paramedics before being questioned.
Police said they seized a number of items from the scene however initial examinations indicated none of them were explosives.
The man was this afternoon charged with conveying false information that a person or property is in danger.
He was refused bail and is due to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Monday.
